Food Pantry Ministry

With so many food insecure families struggling to put food on their tables due to rising food prices, one of our Faith in Action ministries is the collection of food donations for area food pantries. We collect unexpired non-perishable food items in the atrium for an entire month and then take the donations to a food pantry during the third week of each month to meet the potential month-end demand as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) allotments are used up by their recipients.

Gathering Food for the Food Pantry

Food Gathered for the Food Pantry Project

Currently all donations are taken to the Manna Food Pantry program sponsored
by Hands on Hartford, a social service nonprofit organization that serves
Hartford’s most economically challenged residents. Their pantry is a full-service
shopping model food pantry, allowing clients to choose food that will suit their
families’ needs and tastes, minimizing food waste and maximizing nutritional
value. Donations of unexpired food are essential to their program’s operations.
To support our brothers and sisters in Christ, members of St. James’ are asked to
consider adding an item or two for our food pantry ministry to their shopping cart
as they do their weekly food shopping.
